Speculative Design
Purposeful Lighting may seem like a straightforward project goal, but what if we challenge that idea by developing a more speculative product? Here, one possible relationship of technology with human interaction is explored.
As technology becomes more and more incorporated into our lives, Face Forward asks what a world would be like where we could know each other’s feelings. What do we look like when we are a force to be vulnerable? Will technology begin to feel for us?

Inspiration
Process
Face Forward came to life by entirely hand-on efforts. First starting with a plaster head cast. Then prototyping with heat formed acrylic. Then some pattern making, wireing and glueing to reach the final design.
Technology and Working Parts
The muscle sensor and heartrate sensor are input into the arduino while the LEDs are output.
The eyebrow movement and pulse is tracked to an emotion and the LEDs
display the
emotion as light.
Final Design
Love, Anger, and Nervousness are the emotions that came to fruition in Face Forward. In “reality”, there would be light patterns for all emotions that can be named.
